What's New in Version 3.6.5
For this version 3.6.5 release, the Now Contact has several new features and improvements.
Ñ The QuickNet features let you use the Internet to find street maps, email addresses, phone numbers and zip+4 codes.
Ñ Two more web browser programs, Microsoft Explorer and America Online, are supported in addition to Netscape Navigator.
Ñ New QuickMerge mail merge support lets you import your Contacts into merged Word and WordPerfect documents.
Ñ New QuickEmail Access features let you launch pre-addressed email in your preferred email program, directly from Contacts containing email addresses. Programs supported include Eudora, America Online, Claris Emailer, QuickMail Pro, Netscape Navigator and Internet Mail & News.
Ñ Added Internet preference settings let you choose your browser and email programs or use the settings in the Internet Config utility.
Ñ Non-standard WDEFs (such as Aaron, Kaleidoscope, and Windowshade) no longer cause the Now Contact windows to jump several pixels to the left after being dragged to a new location.
Version 3.6 users: Your serial number from version 3.6 enables both Now Up-to-Date and Now Contact. Serial numbers for the Now Up-to-Date Web Publisher are provided only for users purchasing the version 3.6.5 upgrade.
Upgrading to the Now Up-to-Date Web Publisher
The Now Up-to-Date Web Publisher turns your Public Event Server and Public Contact Server into full-featured World Wide Web servers, capable of publishing calendar and contact data of any kind on the World Wide Web. And with Now's exclusive drag-and-drop technology, users can drag and drop contacts and events from your web site directly into their Now Up-to-Date & Contact calendars and contact files.
For more information, check out the Now Software Web site at http://www.nowsoft.com or call 800.237.2078.
Upgrading From Pre-3.6 Versions of Now Up-to-Date & Contact:
Previous versions of the installer could not always replace an older version with the current version automatically. If you are upgrading from a version older than 3.6, do the following to ensure a smooth upgrade to version 3.6.5:
1. Remove the version number appended to the Now Up-to-Date and Now Contact applications. (For example, the installer for version 3.5 named the Now Up-to-Date application "Now Up-to-Date 3.5." You should rename it "Now Up-to-Date." Do the same for Now Contact, if applicable.)
2. Remove the version number appended to the Now Up-to-Date and Now Contact folders and add "Folder." (For example, the installer for version 3.5 placed the Now Up-to-Date application in a folder named "Now Up-to-Date 3.5." You should rename the folder "Now Up-to-Date Folder." Do the same for the Now Contact folder, if applicable.)
3. The Now Up-to-Date and Now Contact folders should be in the same folder, or at the top level of your hard disk.
After you have performed these steps, you may go ahead and install as usual. When the installer asks where you want to install your selections, choose the folder or disk that contains the Now Up-to-Date or Now Contact folders. Your old versions will be replaced.
Note: Now Up-to-Date & Contact version 3.6.5 converts your Calendar and Address Book files to a newer format if you are upgrading from the following versions:
Ñ Now Up-to-Date version 3.5 or earlier
Ñ Now Contact version 3.6 or earlier
If, at the end of the free 30-day demo period, you choose to not purchase and register this upgrade, but instead want to resume using one of these earlier versions, your updated Calendar and Address Book files will no longer be readable by the earlier version. You have two options when returning to these earlier versions:
Ñ Export your version 3.6.5 Calendar and Address Book files to text files as described in the Now Up-to-Date & Contact User's Guide. Then, create new Calendar and Address Book files in your earlier versions of Now Up-to-Date & Contact and import those text files into them as described in the User's Guide. The Event and Contact data you created in version 3.6.5 will be retained, but links to files and between Events and Contacts will be lost, and multiple notes in individual Contacts will be merged into a single note.
Ñ Use the backup Calendar and Address Book files that Now Up-to-Date & Contact saved when it converted them for the newer version. The Event and Contact data in these files will be as it was when you upgraded to version 3.6.5. You can export the Events and Contacts you created in version 3.6.5 to text files and then import them into your old Calendar and Address Book files as described in the User's Guide. This way, your older Event and Contact data will retain all links and individual notes. Only in the newer, imported Events and Contacts will links be lost, and multiple Contact notes be merged.
This restriction does not apply to users of Now Up-to-Date version 3.6 and Now Contact version 3.6.2, which can read Calendar and Address Book files updated by Now Up-to-Date & Contact version 3.6.5.
Upgrading the Public Event and Public Contact Servers:
If you are upgrading a Public Event or Public Contact Server, you should choose the Public Event Server or Public Contact Server installation options instead of the Full Install option. When the installer asks you to choose a location for the install, select the folder containing the server you wish to upgrade.
If you have changed the name of the Server from "Public Event Server" or "Public Contact Server," the installer will not replace the old server application, although it will install the new one. If this is the case, then you must complete the installation by manually removing the old server application and renaming the new server to match the old one.
Additional QuickMerge Info
QuickMerge works using Apple Events and word processor macros. There are some issues related to this.
Your Word Processor must be Installed Before Now Contact
If you install a word processor for use with QuickMerge after you have installed Now Contact 3.6.5, run the installer again, choose `Custom Install' and select the option to install the macro for the new word processor.
WordPerfect Macro Installation
The macro for WordPerfect is installed into the Library (USA) or Library (CAN) file in your Preferences:WordPerfect folder. Because this involves a resource merge, there is a slim chance that a previously recorded macro could be overwritten. For this reason, your original Library file is saved in a Library Backups folder in the same location. If you find that a previously recorded macro is no longer available, use WordPerfect's Librarian function to copy the missing macro from the Library backup. See your Wordperfect documentation for instructions on using the librarian.
Microsoft Word Macro
The macro for Microsoft Word 6 is installed in the Word Startup Folder (6) in your preferences folder. We have found some cases where Word does not remember its startup folder location. If you find that QuickMerge does not function with Microsoft Word 6, try the following in Word:
1. Go to Tools: Options.
2. Click the File Locations tab.
3. Select Startup under File Types.
4. Click Modify.
5. Locate the `Word Startup Folder (6)' in the Preferences folder in the System Folder
Note: If the `Word Startup Folder (6)' folder does not exist, create it. Then, run the Now Installer, choose `Custom Install' and select the option to install only the Microsoft Word Macro.
Drag and Drop from World Wide Web Pages
One the most exciting new features in Now Up-to-Date & Contact 3.6.x is the ability to drag Event and Contact information from World Wide Web pages into your Now Up-to-Date & Contact Calendar and Address Book. Here are a few things you should know about this feature:
Dragging for the First Time
The first time you drag and drop from a web page in Netscape, a dialog box will probably appear, saying
"You have started to download the file 'filename.vef' of type 'text/x-nowevent.' Click 'More Info' to learn how to extend Navigator's capabilities."
If you see this dialog box, click the Save File button it contians. You will see this message only when you drag and drop from a World Wide Web page for the first time.
Clicking on Drag Handles
When you want to get information from a web page into your Calendar or Address Book, you should be sure to drag the Event's or Contact's drag handle (which looks like >> on the WWW page) instead of clicking it. If this happens; you can always drag the file icon saved by Netscape from your hard disk into your calendar or contact file, just as you would drag from the Netscape window directly.
Dragging To-Dos
When you drag a To-Do from a web page to your Calendar, it appears in your Calendar on the date it was originally created. This means that if a To-Do has been set to auto-forward by the publisher of the WWW page, it will appear on the current date there, but will appear on the date it was created when dragged into your calendar.
About Internet Config
The Internet Config program is included with this release for users who would like to use it but don't have it. If you choose to install and use Internet Config, please be aware that it is not a Now Software product and that Now Software does not provide technical support for it.
Known Issues
Problem: Internet Mail and News is limited in the amount of Contact email addresses it can list.
If you use Internet Mail and News as your email program, which is included with Microsoft's Internet Explorer, you may not be able to include all Contacts to which you want to address an email. Due to a limitation of this program, no more than 249 characters (separating semicolons (;) included) are accepted for the address. If the list of addresses for Contacts you've selected exceeds this limit, it will be truncated to 249 characters, and so some Contacts will be excluded.
Problem: No preaddressed email with QuickMail Pro when not logged in.
QuickMail Pro uses a background application to log you in and check for mail. If this application (QM Backgrounder) is not running when you initiate QuickEmail Access from Now Contact, QuickMail Pro launches, asks you to log on to the mail server, and does not open a new message to your selected Contacts.
To avoid this problem, make sure you log in to the mail server before using the QuickEmail Access feature.
Problem: Eudora 3, when running, cannot accept multiple addresses from Now Contact.
When running, Eudora version 3 will not accept more than three or four addresses from Now Contact.
To avoid this problem, quit Eudora before before initiating email with Now Contact, and allow Now Contact to launch Eudora with the correct set of addresses in a message.
Problem: QuickMerge may require more memory than is allocated by default for your word processor.
QuickMerge is a memory-intensive feature. If your word processor fails to launch when you initiate QuickMerge, increase the memory allocation for the word processor program and try again.
Problem: A different version of a mailer or browser than expected is launched.
Now Contact uses the MacOS desktop database to determine the location of selected browsers and mailers. If you have more than one version of a particular browser or mailer installed, such as Netscape Navigator and Navigator Gold, the desktop database will usually indicate the last one opened for a particular creator code.
To avoid this problem, use Internet Config to select a specific application for your http or mailto helper, then select "Use Internet Config Settings" in the Internet Preferences for Now Contact.
Problem: QuickMerge will not work with Word 5 when Word 6 is installed.
This is closely related to the Desktop DB problem mentioned above, since Word 5 and Word 6 use the same creator code, only one will be available as an option for QuickMerge.
Problem: QuickMerge will not work with Word 6 when its "Tip of the Day" feature is enabled.
Be sure to disable this feature in Word 6 when you intend to use it with QuickMerge.
Problem: Running Now Contact causes MacPPP to connect.
If you are using any PPP implementation other than OT/PPP on your Macintosh (FreePPP, MacPPP, etc.) and you have the "Auto Connect" option turned on, PPP will attempt to connect to your Internet Service Provider every time you launch Now Contact. The solution is to turn off PPP's "Auto Connect" option.
1. Open the "Config PPP" control panel.
2. Check the "Disable Auto Connect" checkbox.
3. Close the control panel.
Once you've turned off "Auto Connect", you will need to open the "Config PPP" control panel and click the "Open" button whenever you want to connect to your Internet Service Provider.
For information on Apple's Open Transport PPP client software, as well as how to configure other PPP clients to work with Now Contact, see the `If you connect to the internet with PPP' folder on the CD
Problem: QuickDay causes Type 25 errors in some installations of System 7.5.2 and higher.
Some users are experiencing a problem in Now Up-to-Date where, after running for some time, it uses up all its available memory and crashes with a type 25 error. This problem occurs sporadically and only on machines running System 7.5.2 or higher. We are working on a fix. In the meantime, disabling the QuickDay control panel will prevent the problem.
Problem: Files on network volumes attached to Public Events cannot be opened by other Now Up-to-Date users.
If you attach a file residing on a network volume to a Public Event in Now Up-to-Date, other users on the network will get an error if they attempt to open the file in Now Up-to-Date.
Problem: QuickDay's menus are corrupted by the Apple Menu Options control panel.
If you have the Apple Menu Options control panel installed, the first time you click a pop-up menu in QuickDay's Event Info window, the contents of the menu will scroll off the menu. Clicking on the menu again allows you to select from the menu. The problem will occur only once per restart.
Problem: Changing any Contact data and the Contact's Category at the same time causes RECONCILE FIELDS note.
If you change the Category of a Public Contact and change any other data (Name, Address, etc.) at the same time, a "reconcile fields" note is added to the contact by the Public Contact Server. The note contains the changes you just made to the contact.
Problem: EPS graphics don't print in label/envelope templates.
There is a problem associated with printing EPS graphics in some template types. We are working to address this problem, but until a fix is available, we hope the following workarounds will help you accomplish what you need to do:
Label Templates: In order for a placed EPS graphic to print on a label template, you must expand the text box on the label so that it encompasses the graphic. To do this, perform the following steps:
1. In the Template Editor, open the label template into which you want to place the graphic.
2. Place the graphic where you want it on the page.
3. Select the pointer tool by clicking the arrow button in the toolbar.
4. Click to select the text box containing the text to be printed on the label.
5. Drag the corner of the text box so that it completely surrounds the graphic.
6. If necessary, adjust the margins of the text so that the text starts where you want it to.
When you print, the EPS graphic will print correctly.
Envelope Templates: The steps for envelope templates are as follows:
1. In the Template Editor, open the envelope template into which you want to place the graphic.
2. Select the text box containing the return address and "cut" it to the clipboard.
3. Place the graphic where you want it on the page.
4. Select the pointer tool by clicking the arrow button in the toolbar.
5. Click to select the text box containing the text to be printed on the label.
6. Drag the corner of the text box so that it completely surrounds the graphic.
7. If necessary, adjust the margins of the text so that the text starts where you want it to.
8. Paste the return address text box back in.
If you don't cut and paste the return address text box as instructed, the EPS graphic will not appear on the printout.
Problem: Undoing the "cut" of a graphic and text in the Template Editor or Word Processor results in strange behavior.
If you are editing a Word Processor template that contains a graphic and some text, and perform the following actions:
1. Select the graphic and some text.
2. Choose "Cut" from the "Edit" menu.
3. Choose "Undo" from the "Edit" menu.
The graphic and text you cut don't reappear, but there's a big highlighted empty space, as though carriage returns were pasted in. If you print, the letter may extend for several pages, and the cut data doesn't print. If you click the Cancel button, the graphic does not reappear upon subsequent opens.
Running Multiple Servers on a Single Macintosh
It is possible to run more than one Now Up-to-Date or Now Contact server on a single machine. There are, however, some issues you should be aware of and plan for if you intend to run multiple servers per machine.
Upgrading A Multiple Server Setup
We have provided an AppleScript application to ease the process of upgrading a multiple server setup from earlier versions. The script is called "Upgrade Servers" and is located in the Public Event Server and Public Contact Server folders installed by the installer. When you launch the application, it will ask you to locate all of the Public Event or Public Contact Server databases you wish to upgrade. It will then ask you to locate the new Public Event or Public Contact Server applications. Once this is done, the script will upgrade all of the selected databases to version 3.6.
Note: You must have AppleScript 1.1.1 or later and the Finder Scripting Extension installed to use the "Upgrade Servers" AppleScript.
Server Launch Order
If you are running multiple Public Event Servers on the same machine, it is important that the servers be launched in the same order each time. Otherwise, your users may experience problems connecting to the servers. The best way to ensure that the servers are launched in a consistent order is to install aliases to the servers in the Startup Items folder in your System Folder. This will ensure that they are launched in the same order each time.
TCP/IP Port Numbers
Each application that accepts TCP/IP connections, such as the Public Event and Public Contact servers, must be assigned a unique "port" number when running on the same machine. By default, the Public Event Server uses port 4000 and the Public Contact Server uses port 666 to communicate with clients. If you wish to run more than one Public Event Server or Public Contact Server on a machine, and wish to allow clients to connect to the server via TCP/IP, you must change the port number of the server to be unique on that machine. The port number can be changed in the Server Configuration dialog box.
Note: Other applications may also use specific port numbers, and setting the Public Event Server or Public Contact Server to use a port number in use by another application will have unpredictable results. If another application, especially one dealing with the internet, starts to fail after you change the port number of the Public Event Server or Public Contact Server, see if using another port number solves the problem.
TCP/IP Listener Maximums
Your Macintosh has a maximum of 64 TCP/IP listeners available to applications running on it. Without going into the details of what a "TCP/IP listener" is, suffice it to say that enabling TCP/IP connections to a server uses up 16 of the 64 listeners available. Therefore, the maximum number of Public Event or Public Contact Servers accepting TCP/IP connections on a given machine is 4. Note also that, if you are using the Now Web Publisher features of the server, an additional 16 listeners are used to enable that functionality. Also, other applications, such as Netscape Navigator, require a number of TCP/IP listeners themselves, and will affect your ability to run multiple servers on a machine.
